Description

Cat 161-4113 Engine Oil Pump - Genuine Caterpillar One Section Gear Pump

The Cat 161-4113 is a genuine Caterpillar one section engine oil gear pump. It is gear driven off the front of the engine and supplies pressurized oil to the bearings, the valve train, the piston cooling jets and the turbo. 161-4113 covers a wide range of Cat engines including the 3406 and 3408 families, C9, C15, C16 and C18. Also listed under 0R-9449, 4N-8734 and 7N-0286.

Key Functions:

- Pressurizes and circulates engine oil to the bearings, valve train and turbo
- Feeds the piston cooling jets
- Gear type pump driven off the engine front gear train

Purpose of the Part

161-4113 is what keeps oil moving through the engine. The gears pull oil from the pan, push it through the cooler and filter and out to everything that needs it, the main and rod bearings, the cam, the valve train, the turbo cartridge and the piston cooling jets. Oil pressure is what holds the bearing film in place, so when 161-4113 stops making pressure the bearings go metal to metal in short order. The pump is driven mechanically off the gear train, so it makes flow in proportion to engine speed and the relief valve dumps the excess.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

The main sign is low oil pressure, either a warning and derate or a gauge that reads low once the oil is hot. Pressure that is fine cold and drops off hot usually means worn gears or clearances opened up inside 161-4113. A whine or growl from the front of the engine under load is another one. Bearing damage, copper or babbitt in the filter and knocking are all downstream of a pump that stopped keeping up.

Before replacing 161-4113, verify the reading with a mechanical gauge since sender and wiring faults read the same, and check for a plugged pickup screen, a stuck relief valve, a clogged filter or bypassing cooler, and worn bearings that are dumping pressure. Any of those will look like a bad pump.

If the engine had a bearing failure or turbo failure, debris went through 161-4113 and it should be replaced rather than reused.

Brand Information

Cat builds the oil pump to the flow and pressure the engine's bearing clearances and piston cooling jets were designed around. On a high hour engine that margin matters, a pump that moves slightly less volume will still make pressure at idle and fall short hot and loaded, which is where bearing damage starts.

Installation Notes

1. Find out why the old pump failed, debris from a prior bearing or turbo failure will take out 161-4113 the same way.
2. Drop the pan and clean it out, then check and clean the pickup screen and tube.
3. Flush the oil galleries and replace the cooler if it is loaded with debris, cleaning is usually not enough after a failure.
4. Inspect the relief valve and replace it if it is scored or sticking.
5. Check the drive gear and idler for wear before installing 161-4113.
6. Install with new gaskets and seals and torque to the Cat spec for the engine, do not guess on the pickup tube fasteners.
7. Prime the system before startup, prefill the filter and prime the pump so it is not running dry.
8. Crank with fuel disabled until pressure shows on a mechanical gauge, then start and verify pressure hot and cold before loading the engine.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine unit has the Cat part number cast or stamped into the pump body along with a casting date code, not a printed label. Check the number matches what you ordered and that the machining on the gear faces and the mounting surfaces is clean and even. Copies usually have rough casting finishes and different porting or mounting boss shapes than the original.
