Buy Genuine Detroit Diesel EGR Valve for Series 60 12.7L & 14L - wisentpartscenter.com

Description

Detroit Diesel 23533705 EGR Valve and Actuator - Genuine Detroit Series 60 12.7L and 14L

The Detroit Diesel 23533705 is a genuine EGR valve with actuator for Series 60 12.7L and 14L engines, DDEC IV, 2003 to 2004. It meters exhaust gas back into the intake to bring combustion temperature down and cut NOx. 23533705 uses a pneumatic actuator, so the valve is opened and closed by air pressure commanded by the engine controls rather than by an electric motor.

Key Functions:

- Meters exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature
- Pneumatically actuated, commanded by the engine controls
- Controls NOx output to keep the engine in emissions compliance

Fitment & Specifications:

- Detroit Series 60 12.7L and 14L
- DDEC IV, 2003 to 2004
- Pneumatic actuator, air operated
- Valve and actuator assembly

Verify by VIN, ESN and Part number before ordering.

Purpose of the Part

23533705 controls how much exhaust gas gets fed back into the intake. Recirculated exhaust is inert, so it takes up space in the cylinder without burning, which drops peak combustion temperature and cuts NOx formation. The engine controls decide how much flow is needed based on load and rpm and command air pressure to the actuator on 23533705, which opens or closes the valve to that position. Too little flow and NOx goes up along with EGT, too much and the engine loses power and smokes.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Soot is what takes these out. Carbon builds up on the valve and seat until it sticks or will not seal, and the symptoms depend on where it hangs up.

Stuck open shows as low power, black smoke, rough idle, poor fuel economy and hard starting. Stuck closed shows as high EGT, EGR flow faults and NOx related codes. Either way you usually end up with a check engine light and eventually a derate.

Before replacing 23533705, check the air supply lines and fittings to the actuator for leaks or restriction since a pneumatic valve will not move without clean air pressure. Also check the delta P sensor and its lines for soot plugging, and check the EGR cooler and hot pipe for restriction. All of those throw EGR flow faults with the valve itself being fine.

Brand Information

Detroit Diesel is a Daimler Trucks North America company and builds the EGR valve to the flow the Series 60 emissions calibration was certified around. On this engine the EGR valve, the cooler, the hot pipe and the delta P sensor all work off the same expected flow, so a valve that does not seat or stroke the same as the original leaves the engine throwing flow faults even after the repair.

Installation Notes

1. Find out why the old valve failed, a plugged cooler or hot pipe will soot up 23533705 the same way.
2. Check the EGR cooler and hot pipe for restriction or leaks and clean or replace as needed.
3. Blow out and inspect the delta P sensor lines, they plug with soot and throw the same codes.
4. Check the air supply lines and fittings to the pneumatic actuator for leaks, cracks or restriction.
5. Clean the mounting surfaces completely and check them for flatness and cracks.
6. Install 23533705 with new gaskets and torque evenly to spec.
7. Reconnect the air lines and any sensor connections, make sure the fittings are tight and the lines are routed clear of heat.
8. Clear codes and verify the valve is moving and EGR flow is reporting correctly before returning the truck to service.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine unit has the part number and the Detroit Diesel logo cast into the body itself, not printed on or applied with a sticker. Check that the number on the casting matches what you ordered. Aftermarket units usually leave the logo off the casting and put the markings on a label instead.
