Description

Cummins 3607932 Thermostat - Genuine Cummins Engine Coolant Thermostat

The Cummins 3607932 is a genuine engine coolant thermostat. It stays closed on a cold engine so it warms up fast, then opens at its rated temperature to let coolant flow to the radiator and hold the engine in its normal operating range.

Key Functions:

- Blocks coolant flow to the radiator until the engine warms up
- Opens at its rated temperature to control operating temp
- Holds the engine in its normal temperature range

Purpose of the Part

A cold engine needs to warm up quickly and a hot one needs to shed heat, and the thermostat is what manages both. Closed, it keeps coolant in the block so the engine reaches temperature fast. Once it hits the rated opening point, it opens and routes coolant through the radiator. It is constantly modulating in between to hold a steady temperature.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Stuck closed gives you overheating, since coolant never reaches the radiator. Stuck open gives you an engine that runs cold, slow to warm up, poor heat and worse fuel economy, and on an emissions engine that can throw codes and mess with regens.

Before replacing it, make sure the overheating is not something else, a bad water pump, low coolant, an airbound system, or a plugged radiator all look similar.

Brand Information

Cummins sets the opening temperature to what the engine's cooling and emissions systems are tuned around. A thermostat that opens early or late throws the engine off that target, which on emissions engines can mean regen and temperature faults, not just a cooling problem.

Installation Notes

1. Drain the coolant down below the thermostat housing.
2. Clean the housing and mating surface completely, no old gasket left behind.
3. Install the thermostat the right way round with a new seal or gasket.
4. Torque the housing evenly to spec, do not overtighten.
5. Refill with the correct coolant and bleed the air out.
6. Run it up to temperature and check that it opens and there are no leaks.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine unit has the CalTherm label showing CUMMINS, THERMOSTATIC VALVE, the part number, the temperature rating and MADE IN USA. Check the part number and 100°F rating on the label match your order. CalTherm is the OE manufacturer, so their name on the label is a good sign the unit is genuine.
