Description

Cummins 4034128 Electronic Turbocharger Actuator Kit - Genuine Holset VGT Actuator.

The Cummins 4034128 is a genuine Holset electronic actuator kit that controls your variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). Taking commands from the engine's ECU, it adjusts the turbo's vane position in real time - regulating exhaust flow through the turbine and controlling boost pressure across all operating conditions. The result is reduced turbo lag, sharper throttle response, consistent power under load, and proper engine braking and EGR performance.

Key Functions:
- Electronically adjusts VGT vane position via ECU signals
- Regulates boost pressure for responsive, efficient performance
- Supports engine braking and emissions system operation

Fitment & Specifications:
- Fits: Cummins ISC, ISL, ISB, QSB (24V systems)
- Voltage: 24 Volt

Verify fitment with your engine serial number (ESN) or VIN before ordering.

Purpose of the Part

The actuator helps reduce turbo lag at low RPM and controls and limits boost pressure at higher RPM by adjusting the turbo vanes to control exhaust gas speed based on ECM commands. When the actuator closes the vanes, the gap through which exhaust gas travels becomes smaller, this increases the pressure and pushes the gas faster, which increases boost. Then, when boost needs to be lowered, the vanes open to make the gap wider, which decreases gas pressure and speed.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Harder acceleration with black smoke blowing out. The actuator is stuck in a closed position, which restricts airflow, causing the slow acceleration and black smoke. Since airflow is restricted and the ECM thinks the actuator is open more than it is, it demands more fuel, causing the excessive black smoke.

Related fault codes may include:

1894 - VGT Actuator Circuit Abnormal Update Rate (ECM not receiving messages from the actuator)
2385 - VGT Actuator Driver Circuit Voltage Above Normal
2386 - VGT Actuator Motor Current Above Normal
2387 - VGT Actuator Motor Mechanical System Not Responding Properly (often stuck or carbon-fouled vanes)
2388 - VGT Actuator Position Failed Automatic Calibration
2449 - VGT Actuator Out of Calibration (often set when an actuator is replaced without completing the relearn)

These codes should be diagnosed before replacement, since wiring, stuck vanes, or calibration issues can cause similar symptoms.

Brand Information

Cummins is the original engine manufacturer behind the ISB, ISC, ISL and QSB platforms and their actuators are built by Holset, the same Cummins owned company that builds the VGT turbos they control. That matters here since the actuator has to talk to the ECM, hold exact vane position and pass calibration, so its built matched to the exact turbo and engine. Aftermarket copies might bolt on fine but if it cant complete calibration or hold position the engine goes right back into derate.

Installation Notes

1. Start with the key on and engine off, and launch Cummins INSITE.
2. Connect the new actuator by wire only, do not install it yet.
3. In INSITE, go to diagnostics and run a pre-calibration.
4. Make sure the vanes are not seized and can move freely.
5. Align the turbo, then mount the actuator.
6. As the final step, run the calibration.

How to Identify an OEM Part

The key indicator of an original Holset actuator is the Holset branding cast into the housing, not printed or on a sticker. This is the main and probably the most important sign. A couple more signs that add to the main Holset casting are the Holset label with the part number and serial number.
