Description

International 4045105C1 Fan Clutch - Genuine Navistar Cooling Fan Clutch

The International 4045105C1 is the genuine Navistar fan clutch for Cummins B6.7L applications. It sits between the belt drive and the cooling fan, engaging the fan when the engine needs airflow and releasing it when it does not, so the fan is not turning at full speed every minute the engine runs.

Key Functions:

- Engages and disengages the cooling fan on demand
- Holds engine coolant temperature within its operating range
- Cuts parasitic drag and fan noise when full cooling is not needed

Fitment & Specifications:

- Engine: Cummins B6.7L
- Vehicles: Navistar International, IC Bus
- Belt: 8 groove serpentine
- Weight: 25 lbs
- Package dimensions: 20 x 15 x 10 in

Purpose of the Part

A cooling fan large enough to hold temperature on a loaded truck at low speed pulls real power from the engine when it runs. Turning it constantly would waste fuel and add noise for most of a duty cycle that does not need it.

The 4045105C1 solves that by decoupling the fan from its drive. Airflow at road speed handles cooling on its own much of the time, so the clutch keeps the fan disengaged and free-spinning, then locks it to the drive when temperature climbs, when the air conditioning demands it, or when the engine is working hard at low road speed. Engaged, it turns the fan at drive speed. Released, the engine gets that power back.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

A clutch that will not engage shows up as overheating at low speed, on grades, or while idling with the air conditioning on, while highway running stays normal because ram air is doing the work.

A clutch stuck engaged is the opposite and easier to miss as a fault: constant fan roar, slow warm-up in cold weather, a noticeable drop in fuel economy, and a truck that runs cool all the time.

Also worth acting on: bearing noise or wobble at the fan, a fan that can be turned freely by hand when it should be locked, and oily residue thrown around the fan shroud.

Brand Information

International Trucks has built commercial vehicles since 1902 and produces medium duty, heavy duty, severe service and vocational trucks along with IC Bus school buses. Navistar sells parts through roughly 1,000 dealer outlets across the United States, Canada, Brazil and Mexico.

Installation Notes

Replace the hub bearings at the same time as the clutch. On this style of fan clutch that is not optional - reusing worn hub bearings is a common cause of repeat failure and will void warranty coverage on the new clutch.

Check belt condition and tensioner while the front is apart.

How to Identify an OEM Part
