Description

Cummins 4394580 Diesel Particulate Filter - Genuine Cummins Particulate Filter Kit

The Cummins 4394580 is a genuine Cummins diesel particulate filter, the soot trap that sits between the oxidation catalyst and the SCR. Exhaust is forced through the walls of a ceramic honeycomb, which holds back particulate matter and releases it as ash during regeneration. Cummins supplies it as a particulate filter kit rather than a bare substrate.

Key Functions:

- Traps particulate matter from the exhaust stream
- Wall flow filter design, regenerated rather than replaced on a service interval
- Sits between the DOC and the SCR in the aftertreatment assembly

Fitment & Specifications:

- Engine: Cummins B6.7
- Emissions: EPA 2017 and EPA 2021
- Weight: 55 lbs

Purpose of the Part

Diesel combustion produces soot that the oxidation catalyst upstream cannot burn off on its own. The 4394580 catches it. Exhaust cannot pass straight through the substrate - alternate channels are plugged, so gas is forced sideways through the porous ceramic wall while particulate stays behind on the inlet face.

That soot is then burned off during regeneration, either passively at road speed or actively when the ECM commands dosing to raise exhaust temperature. What burning cannot remove is ash, which accumulates permanently and is why a filter eventually needs cleaning or replacement no matter how well the engine runs.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

High differential pressure across the filter is the primary signal, along with regens that come more often, run longer, or fail to complete. Soot and ash load readings that stay high after a successful regen. Reduced power, then derate.

A filter that has been cleaned repeatedly and still shows high backpressure has reached the end of its service life - ash does not come out with a normal regen and eventually fills the channels.

Cracked or melted substrate is a different failure. That comes from a runaway regen or from raw fuel reaching the filter, and it means something upstream needs attention before a new filter goes in.

Brand Information

Cummins has built diesel engines since 1919 and is one of the largest independent engine manufacturers in the world, with a distribution network spanning roughly 190 countries. Cummins Emission Solutions builds the aftertreatment for the B6.7 and publishes each filter as part of a matched top level assembly rather than as a standalone component.

Installation Notes

Check the DOC ahead of it and the dosing system before installing. A filter that plugged from oil or raw fuel will plug again if the source is still there.
