The Bendix 5001710X is a genuine TU-FLO 550 air brake compressor. It is a two cylinder single stage reciprocating compressor, driven off the engine, that builds and maintains the air pressure for the truck's air brakes and air systems. Flange mount, for Cummins engines.

Key Functions:

- Builds and maintains air pressure for the brakes and air systems
- Two cylinder single stage reciprocating design
- Engine driven, flange mount

Fitment & Specifications:

- Cummins engines including M11, N14, ISM and Big Cam
- TU-FLO 550, flange mount
- Two cylinder, single stage

Purpose of the Part

The compressor is what keeps air in the tanks so the brakes work. It runs off the engine the whole time, and the governor cuts it in and out to hold the system between cut in and cut out pressure. When it is not building air, it runs unloaded. On a truck, no air means no brakes, so this is a safety critical part.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Slow air buildup, the system not reaching cut out, the compressor knocking, and oil getting pushed downstream into the air dryer and tanks. Excessive oil passing is the common one, it shows up as oil fouling the dryer and lines and usually means worn rings.

Before replacing it, check the governor, the air dryer and for leaks in the system, since those cause slow buildup with a good compressor. If the old one was passing oil, check the dryer and purge valve too, oil carries downstream and can foul the new setup.

Brand Information

Bendix is part of the Knorr-Bremse Group and builds the TU-FLO 550, so a genuine unit is the original design, not a copy of it. Every Bendix compressor is end of line tested, and reman units are built back to spec. On a part that feeds your brake air, that testing is the difference between a compressor you trust and one you hope holds up.

Installation Notes

1. Find out why the old one failed, an oil fouled dryer or a restricted discharge line can carry over to the new compressor.
2. Check and replace the air dryer cartridge if the old compressor was passing oil.
3. Clean the discharge line or replace it if it is coked up with carbon, a restricted discharge line kills compressors.
4. Line up the drive and mount it with new gaskets.
5. Connect the air, coolant and oil lines, making sure the oil supply and return are clear.
6. Prime the oil feed before startup so it is not running dry.
7. Build air and check for leaks, and confirm it cuts in and out at the right pressures.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine unit has the Bendix TU-FLO 550 label on the crankcase with the part number, and Bendix cast into the body. Check the number on the label against your order and compare the head, ports and mounting flange to the compressor coming off. Reman Bendix units are marked as such and end of line tested.
