The Cummins 5271579 is a genuine Cummins EGR valve for 6.7L ISB and QSB engines. It bolts in between the EGR cooler and the intake and controls how much exhaust the engine takes back in. The ECM sets the target, an electric motor moves the valve, and a sensor inside reports the actual position back. Also sold as 4309414, 5271579, 5306676, 5483013, 5578985 and the NX and RX versions of each.

Purpose of the Part

Exhaust that gets sent back through the engine has already burned, so it fills space in the cylinder without adding heat. That pulls peak combustion temperature down, and lower temperature means less NOx coming out the stack. The ECM works out how much to recirculate for the load and rpm the engine is under, and this valve is what carries it out. It moves on an electric motor and reports its own position, so the ECM always knows whether the valve made it to where it was told to go.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Since the valve reports its own position, most failures show up as the ECM catching a difference between where it commanded the valve and where the valve actually went. Soot packs around the seat, the motor works harder to move it, and eventually it stalls or burns out. Often the fault comes up before the truck feels any different to drive.

Look for a check engine light with EGR position or performance faults, soft throttle, black smoke, rough idle, higher EGT, more regens, and derate if it goes long enough.

A leaking EGR cooler is worth ruling out any time a valve packs up. Coolant getting into the exhaust side turns soot into paste and will pack a brand new valve solid in short order. If the valve coming out is wet and gummed up instead of dry and carboned, check the cooler first. Wiring is the other one to rule out, since a bad connector reads the same as a bad valve.

Installation Notes

The valve is the easy part of this job. The intake and the ports are what take the time, and skipping that is why people end up doing it twice.

1. Confirm the cooler is not leaking before anything else.
2. Unplug the connectors, mind the locks, then pull the bolts and lift the valve out with its gasket and plate.
3. Pull the intake and soak it overnight in solvent, then run a wire through every port until they are all open.
4. Clean the tubes to the cooler and gasket them fresh.
5. New gaskets and O rings on reassembly, anti seize on the bolts.
6. Torque evenly, reconnect and make sure the locks seat.
7. Compare EGR differential pressure before and after, run a regen and road test it.

How to Identify an OEM Part

There is no one marking that makes it obvious, so compare the new valve to the one you pulled off. The motor housing, connector position and flange should match exactly. A genuine casting usually looks a little rough and dull, not polished and shiny. Aftermarket units tend to look too clean, and the shape or connector position ends up slightly off.
