Purpose of the Part

5364205 is what puts fuel in the cylinder. The high pressure pump keeps the rail loaded and the injector holds that pressure until the ECM energizes the solenoid, which lifts the needle and lets fuel through the nozzle holes as an atomized spray. On a common rail engine the ECM fires injector several times per combustion event, a small pilot shot to soften the pressure rise and quiet the engine, the main event for power, and post injections for aftertreatment. Injection timing and quantity are controlled purely by when and how long 5364205 is commanded open, which is why nozzle condition and return flow have such a direct effect on how the engine runs.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Common signs are rough idle, misfire, hard starting, white smoke on start, knock or a distinct rattle from one cylinder, low power, poor fuel economy, excessive return flow and cylinder balance or misfire codes pointing at one hole.

7. Program the injector calibration code into the ECM with a scan tool, the code is laser marked on the injector body. Skipping this leaves the engine running rough with balance faults even on new injectors.
8. Replace the valve cover gasket on reassembly.
9. Prime the system, then check for fuel and rail leaks at idle before loading the engine.
