The Detroit Diesel A0101538528 is a genuine soot sensor, also called a particulate matter or PM sensor. It threads into the exhaust downstream of the DPF and measures how much soot is getting past the filter, which is how the ECM knows the DPF is still doing its job. 12 volt, five wire.

Purpose of the Part

The sensor has two electrodes at the tip. Soot collecting between them changes the resistance, and how fast that happens tells the ECM how much particulate is getting through. A built in heater burns the tip clean so the cycle can start over. Almost no soot should reach it on a healthy system, so when it starts reading, the DPF is cracked, leaking or worn out.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Check engine light with PM sensor or DPF efficiency faults, sensor heater or circuit codes, and derate if it stays active.

Because this sensor is watching the DPF, a fault often means the filter is the real problem, not the sensor. Before replacing it, check the DPF for cracks or a failed substrate, check the exhaust for leaks upstream of the sensor, and check the connector and harness. Soot getting past a damaged filter will set the same codes with a perfectly good sensor installed.

5. Route the harness away from the exhaust and make sure the connector locks.
6. Clear codes and let the sensor run its heat cycle before checking whether the fault comes back.
