Purpose of the Part

Exhaust drives the turbine, which spins the compressor and forces more air into the engine. The variable vanes are what set this apart from a fixed turbo. Closed, they speed the exhaust up to build boost fast at low rpm, open, they keep boost in check higher up. The actuator moves the vanes to whatever the engine controls call for, and the coolant circuit keeps the center section cool since it is bolted to hot exhaust.

Low power and low boost, black smoke, turbo lag, a whine or siren that changes with rpm, oil in the intake or exhaust, and actuator or boost faults.

The vanes are the usual trouble spot. Soot builds up and they stick, so boost will not come up and the actuator sets faults trying to reach a position it cannot. Check that the vanes move before condemning it. Everything else comes back to oil, coolant or debris, a starved oil supply wipes the bearings, a plugged coolant passage cooks the center section, and dirt through the intake destroys the wheel.

John Deere sources this turbo from BorgWarner and specifies the vane sizing, actuator calibration and titanium wheel to match the PowerTech engine. Those are part of the spec, not upgrades. A turbo that flows or responds differently will bolt up and still leave the engine down on power or setting boost faults, which is the usual result with a non genuine unit.

Installation Notes

Find out why the old turbo failed before fitting this one, oil starvation, stuck vanes or debris will take the new one out the same way. Check the oil and coolant supply lines are clear, and check the intake for debris. Prime the cartridge with clean oil before connecting the supply line, do not reposition the actuator or vanes by hand, and let it idle to build oil pressure before loading it. If the engine controls require it, run the turbo calibration after install.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine unit has the John Deere leaping deer cast into the compressor housing and a BorgWarner (BWTS) ID tag with the model and part number, not printed or stickered. The actuator is a BorgWarner unit. Check the tag matches your order and compare the housings, actuator and flange positions to the turbo coming off. Copies usually leave the deer logo off or cast it rough.
