Purpose of the Part

Sending exhaust back into the intake cools combustion down, because that gas is already burned and does not burn again, it just takes up room in the cylinder. Lower peak temperature means less NOx. How much goes back in is up to the ECM, and it works this valve to get there. On the DDEC V setup the actuator is electric but the muscle is hydraulic, the actuator just directs the pressure that moves the flap. Not enough flow and EGT climbs along with NOx, too much and the engine loses power and smokes.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Soot is what gets these. Carbon builds up on the flap and seat until it hangs up or stops sealing.

Stuck open gives you low power, black smoke, rough idle and bad fuel mileage. Stuck closed gives you high EGT and EGR flow codes. Either way you end up with a light on the dash and eventually a derate.

Before replacing it, blow out the delta P sensor lines since they plug with soot and throw the same codes. Check the EGR cooler and hot pipe for restriction, and check the actuator wiring and connector. Also make sure the hydraulic supply to the actuator is clean and flowing, since the valve will not move right without it.

5. Clean the mounting surfaces down to bare metal and check them for cracks and flatness.
6. New gaskets, torque evenly to spec.
7. Reconnect the actuator plug and the hydraulic lines, make sure everything is tight and routed away from heat.
8. Clear codes and check that the valve is moving and EGR flow is reading right before it goes back out.

A genuine unit has the part number and the Detroit Diesel logo cast into the body itself, not printed on or applied with a sticker. Check that the number on the casting matches what you ordered. Aftermarket units usually leave the logo off the casting and put the markings on a label instead.
