Purpose of the Part

The water pump keeps coolant moving. Without flow the coolant sitting in the block heats up and the engine cooks itself, and on these engines the pump also feeds the oil cooler and EGR cooler, so when it quits you lose more than just engine cooling. The impeller is what does the work and the seal behind it is what keeps coolant out of the bearing.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Coolant leaking from the weep hole is the most common sign, that means the seal is gone and the bearing is next. Along with that you get overheating, coolant loss with no visible external leak, a whine or growl from the front of the engine, play in the pulley, and coolant temperature codes.

Before replacing the pump, check the radiator and charge air cooler for restriction, check the fan clutch and thermostat, and make sure the belt and tensioner are good. Those cause overheating with a perfectly good pump.

Detroit builds the pump to move the coolant volume the DD13 and DD15 cooling system was designed around, including flow through the oil cooler and EGR cooler. A pump that flows less will still run and still let the engine get hot under load, which is the usual complaint with cheap copies on this part.

Installation Notes

1. Drain the coolant and check the condition, if its rusty or has oil in it flush the system before installing the new pump.
2. Clean the mounting surface completely, no old gasket material left behind.
3. Use the new gaskets and seals that come with the pump, do not reuse the old ones.
4. Check the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys while its apart, a worn tensioner takes out the new pump.
5. Torque the bolts evenly to spec.
6. Fill with the correct coolant, Detroit calls for their extended life coolant, mixing coolant types causes seal problems.
7. Bleed the air out of the system and run it up to temperature, then check for leaks and top off.

How to Identify an OEM Part

The easiest tell is the viscous clutch on top. A genuine unit has MAHLE and Visco cast into the face of it along with Made in Germany, plus the MAHLE numbers cast into the outer edge. Aftermarket pumps either leave that face blank or put their own marking on it.

On the housing itself, look for the casting number cast into the aluminum and the laser etched Daimler number in the A 472 200 20 01 style with a data matrix code next to it, a date code and GER for the country. That laser marking is machine applied and sharp, copies usually skip it entirely or print something on instead.

Last thing, compare the overall shape. The aftermarket versions change the housing castings and the bracket, so lay it next to the pump you are pulling off and make sure the mounting points and ports line up the same.
