Description

Detroit Diesel EA4731400575 EGR Cooler - Genuine Detroit for DD15 and DD16 2015-2020

The Detroit Diesel EA4731400575 is a genuine EGR cooler for DD15 and DD16 engines, 2015 to 2020. It runs engine coolant around the exhaust gas on its way back to the intake so it goes in cool instead of hot.

Key Functions:

- Cools exhaust gas before it reaches the EGR valve and intake
- Keeps combustion temperature and NOx down

Fitment & Specifications:

- Detroit DD15 and DD16
- 2015 to 2020

Note: Verify fitment with us before ordering to ensure the correct part for your application.

Purpose of the Part

Hot exhaust going straight back into the intake would raise combustion temperature instead of lowering it, which defeats the point. The cooler drops that gas temperature first so the EGR actually cuts NOx. It is a heat exchanger with coolant on one side and exhaust on the other, separated by thin tube walls.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

These fail by cracking internally and letting coolant into the exhaust side. Signs are coolant loss with no external leak, white smoke, coolant in the intake or EGR valve.

The other failure is soot plugging, which shows up as high EGT, EGR flow codes and poor mileage.

If you are replacing an EGR valve that came out wet instead of dry, the cooler is leaking and needs to go too, otherwise it takes out the new valve.

Brand Information

Detroit is part of Daimler Trucks North America, so these carry a Daimler number in the A 473 140 05 75 format. The coolers are built by MAHLE, which is why their marking shows on the label. Detroit builds them to the cooling capacity the DD15 and DD16 calibration was certified against. A cooler that pulls less heat leaves EGR and exhaust temperature readings off, so you can end up with flow faults on a truck that just got a new cooler.

Installation Notes

1. Drain the coolant and check it, if it is oily or contaminated flush the system.
2. Check the EGR valve and tubes for coolant residue and soot, clean or replace what is fouled.
3. Clean all mounting surfaces and inspect for cracks and dents.
4. New gaskets, seals and clamps, do not reuse old ones.
5. Torque evenly to spec, uneven clamping cracks the flanges.
6. Fill with the correct Detroit coolant, bleed the air out, run it to temperature and check for leaks.

How to Identify an OEM Part

A genuine cooler has a factory label on the body with the Daimler number written in the A 473 140 05 75 format, a barcode, a data matrix code, a build date, the engine family and the country of manufacture. MAHLE is printed on the label since that is who builds them for Detroit.
