Description

Detroit Diesel RA4720701187 Fuel Injector - Genuine Detroit Bosch Injector for DD15 and DD16

The Detroit Diesel RA4720701187 is a genuine Bosch common rail injector for DD15 and DD16 engines. It holds rail pressure until the ECM fires it, then sprays fuel into the cylinder, firing several times per cycle to control timing and combustion noise.

Key Functions:

- Sprays fuel into the cylinder at rail pressure
- Fires multiple times per cycle off ECM command
- Carries its own calibration code

Fitment & Specifications:

- Detroit DD15 and DD16
- EPA10, GHG14, GHG17
- Bosch 0 445 120 302 / 0 445 120 303

Note: Verify fitment with us before ordering to ensure the correct part for your application.

Purpose of the Part

The pump keeps the rail loaded and the injector stays shut against that pressure until the ECM opens it. How long it is held open is what sets the fueling for that cylinder, so a worn nozzle or one leaking internally throws that hole off on its own.

Issue Symptoms / When to Replace

Knock or rattle from one cylinder, rough idle, hard starting, white smoke cold, low power and cylinder cutout or balance codes pointing at one hole. A leaking injector can also push fuel into the oil, so a rising oil level that smells like diesel is worth checking.

Contaminated fuel and water are the usual cause. Before pulling anything, run a return flow test to find the bad one and check rail pressure, the high pressure pump and the filters, since a supply side problem looks the same on every cylinder. If the pump came apart and put metal through the system, none of the injectors should go back in.

Brand Information

Bosch flow tests every injector and marks it with a code the ECM uses to trim that cylinder. That code is why a genuine injector idles smooth right after install. Uncoded copies leave the ECM correcting off numbers that do not match the hardware.

Installation Notes

1. Find out what killed the old injector first, dirty fuel or a failing pump will do it again.
2. Change the filters and check the water separator.
3. Cap all lines and fittings, debris is the main cause of repeat failures.
4. Use the new seals and gaskets that come with it, do not reuse the old ones.
5. Torque the hold down and high pressure line to spec.
6. Write the calibration code off the injector into the ECM with DiagnosticLink. Skip this and the engine runs rough on brand new parts.
7. Prime and check for leaks before loading it.

How to Identify an OEM Part

Genuine units have the Bosch name, logo and Bosch part number laser etched into the body along with the calibration code. Check the numbers match your order. Copies usually have printed or uneven markings and no calibration code.
