Purpose of the Part

The pump keeps the rail loaded and the injector stays shut against that pressure until the ECM opens it. How long it is held open is what sets the fueling for that cylinder, so a worn nozzle or one leaking internally throws that hole off on its own.

Knock or rattle from one cylinder, rough idle, hard starting, white smoke cold, low power and cylinder cutout or balance codes pointing at one hole. A leaking injector can also push fuel into the oil, so a rising oil level that smells like diesel is worth checking.

Before pulling anything, run a return flow test to find the bad one and check rail pressure, the high pressure pump and the filters, since a supply side problem looks the same on every cylinder.
